Ukraine is a state in Eastern Europe, bordered by the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea to the south.
There are different hypotheses as to the etymology of the name Ukraine. According to the recent linguistic studies it means "homeland" or "native region, country". "The Ukraine" was once the usual form in English but since the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine (1991) style-guides largely recommend not using the definite article.
